Wormsongs

In the Wormsongs Vega creates a digital language that covers the spectrum between noise and pure sine creating a style that can be described as micro-minimal with a passion towards machine-kind.

Inspired by Spiegel’s voice, Vega orchestrates streams of automatic sounds with a vocal part to match. Basing himself on this sound-world he composed the music for the Wormsongs in ‘block’ gestures. These pieces are stripped away from the idea of lyrical lines, replacing them instead with automatic instruments triggered to an equally automatic vocal part.

Emmanuel Flores creates video projections in real time that tickle the senses.

"Im arriving at the conclusion that Henry Vega is a very abstemious miniaturist, one who distills his musical output with as much care as a chemist of the 17th century."
The Sound Projector  - UK

“Here we find a vocal stuttering, a sort of gibberish where a series of hardly decipherable words are emitted, winning us over. Everything seems driven by the vocal automatisms, though certain traditional instruments also peek out, such as piano, violins and various percussion - elements that support the strong musicality of the experience."

Benoît and the Mandelbrots

Benoît and the Mandelbrots see the laptop as their main instrument; they are mainly dedicated to live coding: the process of writing software in real‐time. They use the programming language itself as an at first sight non‐intuitive, but simultaneously expressive interface between man and machine in order to improvise sound and music. Sonic conceptions and structures are expressed live as source code, and interpreted by the computer. The laptop musicians are connected over a network, enabling them to communicate, synchronize and share data. With the flexibility of live coding the sounds are generated specifically to fit the room characteristics and the audience of the performance.

As every performance setting is unique and improvisation is the main paradigm of the group they don’t perform ‘works’ in a classic sense, but consider their whole oeuvre and underlying concept as their work, which expands with every performance. The musical results vary from electronica and ambient to experimental, noise, drones and avant‐garde depending on the event, audience, venue and course of the collective improvisation.

They received an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2012 in the category Digital Musics & Sound Art.

Benoît and the Mandelbrots are Juan A. Romero, Holger Ballweg, Patrick Borgeat, and Matthias Schneiderbanger.
